Melanin is the pigment contained in our skin that has the task of protecting it from sun rays (UVA and UVB). Generally, the production of melanin is a constant, homogeneous action, as is the colouring of skin.
In certain conditions, however, linked to exogenous factors such as age, pregnancy, exposure to sunrays, the taking of oral contraceptives and some medicines (e.g. antibiotics etc.), can cause a non-homogeneous, excessive production of melanin, which brings about the formation of dark spots, also known as cutaneous dyschromia, that are concentrated accumulations of this pigment, mainly in the areas of our body that are most exposed to sunlight (face, hands and neckline).
